She stepped out of the taxi, paying the driver. She grabbed her bag from the trunk, nodding at the driver when she was done. Imagine what he was going to tell co-workers at the cab company. Nova. The Nova, had been in his cab. Of course, Nova was only her stage name. She was really just a normal sixteen year old girl. Who happened to be able to shoot random beams of energy from her hands... Okay, maybe not a normal girl... But still.
Kiara turned to the gate, wondering why she had to be here of all places. She checked the key-chain watch on her bag's strap. Ten am. Her interview would be coming on any minute. She remembered what she had said that day, and what the reporters had asked.
"So," one of the reporters said. "Is it true that your mother, Cassandra Nova, was not found at the site of the fire?"
Kiara nodded. "Yes," she said quietly, one hand clutching the pendant her mother had given her. "My mom had gone to the store. We had run out of milk and eggs, and mom wanted to make cookies. It was my friend's birthday. No one's sure what happened to her..."
"I see," the reporter said. "My next question. You're flying to New York, right? Is it true you're going to live with a relative you've never met?"
Kiara nodded again. "My mom told me about him though," she said. "Professor Charles Xavier is her brother. That's why she gave me this pendant." She took the pendant off and held it up. One of the cameras had zoomed in, and she knew there would be a shot of the pendant on the news broadcast. "She said that, if we ever found him, he'd know who's daughters we were because of the pendants." It was a silver heart shaped pendant that had a small loop on it so it stayed at an angle. It was inset with clear stones, cubic zirconium. Fake diamonds. It was on a silver chain.
"That's a beautiful Pendantt," the reporter said as she put it back on. "Your twin sister is living in foster care?"
"Yes," Kiara confirmed. "And... If you don't mind... I need to pack what few things I've been given by the child care services..." With that, she left. She knew the end of the clip would be something like "That was young star Kiara Nova."
Kiara stood in front of the gate, then pushed it open. It squeaked a little bit, but for such a gate, that wasn't a surprise. She walked onto the grounds, closing the gate securely behind her. She began to walk, wondering what would happen to her here. She pulled her free hand in front of her face, then curled her fingers into a fist. Her hand glowed blue, but the glow faded back into her skin. She looked up at the enormous building before her. Was this really where her uncle Charles lived? This was too big for one person, especially an older man like him. What would he be like? Would he be like Kiara's mother? Or would he be more like her father's mother? She shivered at the thought, clearing her mind. She took a deep breath and started walking again. The only way to find out was to just get it over with...
