I set fire to the rain...
Everything felt different this time.
It had been a year since she moved up north, trading the warmer Southeastern climate for the much cooler one of the New England region. She made it through freshman year swimmingly – no freshman fifteen, homesickness – and with no incidents, much to her satisfaction. Maybe it was the proximity of dozens of other mutants or the hustle and bustle of New York that helped to keep her ability tamed enough not to backfire. The migraines were more frequent, though, some of which medications had not curbed. It was all worth it, though; she no longer was required to live on college campus now, and could be around the institute more now.
She could learn more, train more. And she could now be a part of the most controversial group in the U.S.: Charles Xavier’s very own team of X-Men. What a priceless opportunity to be received.
Adele set down her three bags on the walkway beside her in order to get a better look of the residence. Time had treated the place well, with ivy gently crawling across the bricks and dominating the appearance of the architecture. As far as she could tell no one was outside in the institute’s spacious and inviting grounds, but hopefully a couple of people were milling about inside and would be willing to help her out. She hoped after a year since receiving the invitation to come to Xavier’s the offer was still valid, otherwise she would find herself between a rock and a hard place – back in either a dorm or having to get her own place, and without a way to train herself.
You’re not going to know unless you take the initiative and find out... There was no going back, regardless, once she opened those front doors and stepped through the threshold. With this realization, Adele steeled herself against any forming doubts, as they were getting her nowhere fast. And it would be better to get it over with now than chicken out and flee, and then try to make her way back another time.
At any rate, the air felt humid and heavy with coming rain, and it would be best to get indoors before she found herself caught up in a downpour.
Taking a slow, deep breath, Adele took her luggage back up in her hands and trekked the few yards to the front step, checking only to make sure she was able to ring the doorbell or knock, whichever happened first. And then she did as much, knocking politely just as every other well-mannered lady or gentleman would do. To her surprise it was unlocked, an odd quirk for it to be the middle of the day; nevertheless, she turned the elegant knob with a careful hand and pushed on forward into the main foyer, shutting the door quietly behind her.. She looked around, again noticing the classic and almost homey features throughout the house. It was real quiet for what she assumed would be a busy day, almost too quiet.
“Um… Hello? Is anyone home…?”
