I was abruptly overwhelmed by the truth of my own words. The moment was so perfect, so right. There was no way to doubt it. His arms wrapped around me holding me against him . . . It felt like every nerve ending in my body was a live wire.
"Forever," he agreed.
The year is 2007; graduation is finally over and a massive battle against newborn vampires has been won. Life is starting to get back to normal for Isabella Swan, her version of normal that is. But just when she thinks everything is going according to plan, the pieces slip away. Wars in the south, led by Jasper’s sire Maria, are raging; giving the Volturi just the excuse they need to draw closer to Forks than comfort allows. Upon discovering that Edward has failed to hold up his end of their bargain, the Volturi devise a plan to obtain Bella. Their ultimatum is simple: if Edward and Alice join them, Isabella goes free, human and whole. If they fail to comply, she will be considered a liability and silenced permanently.
News of Bella’s disappearance quickly spreads throughout Forks and nearby La Push. Jacob Black, having returned home after months of playing the lone wolf, immediately asks Sam to assemble a team to get her back, but Sam refuses to put the pack in danger. “I’m sorry, Jake, but she’s not your imprint,” Sam replied in a remorseful tone, “She made her choice and it isn’t you.” Jacob, refusing to accept his Alpha’s answer, breaks away from the pack, forcing the wolves to choose between two leaders. With the pack divided, Jake makes his way to Italy to try and save Bella.
Meanwhile, Edward and Alice agree to the Italian Coven’s demands, offering themselves up to the Volturi in exchange for Bella’s life. Aro, always a man of his word, orders that Bella be released and upon their last night together, unsure of when or if they will ever see one another again, Edward and Bella consummate their relationship. Later that evening, Jacob attempts to infiltrate the vampire’s lair, but is apprehended. Edward intercedes on Jacob’s behalf, asking Aro to spare him so that he can be assured that Bella will return home safely. Bella is sent back to Washington with Jacob, confused by the sudden connection she feels to him.
Jacob believes he has imprinted on Bella belatedly, unable to explain his strengthened feelings for her any other way. Unaware that she is pregnant with a child that is to become her best friend’s true imprint, emotionally devastated at having lost Edward, and incapable of denying the pull she feels toward Jacob, Bella gives in to him. In Volterra, Aro attempts to make Edward and Alice loyal to the guard by having Chelsea cut their bonds to both the Cullen’s and Bella. Back in Forks, Bella learns that she is pregnant. Thinking Edward incapable of reproducing, she confronts Jacob with the news that he is to be a father.
Bella’s health rapidly begins to deteriorate, forcing Jacob to take her to Carlisle for assessment. The doctor reveals that the hard lining in which the child is encased in is a sure sign that the baby is in fact Edward’s. 27 days later, Bella delivers Renesmee, nearly dying in the process. Carlisle is forced to make a split second decision and rather than allow his son’s fiancée to die, he changes Bella into a vampire. When she comes through the fire of the change she is devastated to learn that Jacob’s imprintation wasn’t truly on her, but rather on her daughter. Guilt ridden for betraying Edward, she sets off to Volterra to be with him, only to find that he no longer cares for her.
Meanwhile, Jasper is growing worried. He wants his wife and brother released and begins to devise a plan to achieve this. He calls in all his favors, coercing several other covens to join him, convincing them that the Volturi were supposed to be the dealers of justice, but their greed and thirst for power has corrupted their formerly noble cause. It is time for their reign to end. Internally the foundation of the Volturi begins to decay when Aro's treachery and manipulation begins to come to light. Will his coven still follow him when they learn the truth?
